Science Fiction has a rich history of radio shows starting in the 1930s. At those times it was Buck Rodgers, Flash Gordon, and War of the Worlds. In the 1940’s radio was the worlds leading popular entertainment. But in the 1950s, the popularity of TV in the USA had pretty much wiped out the radio play industry. In other countries such as the UK and New Zealand, radio dramas had continued at some level of popularity, bringing to us well loved shows such as The Hitchhikers Guide.
The form of drama delivered in an audio form took a giant surge in the 2000s with the introduction of the iPod and podcast as a delivery mechanism. Podcasts can also be in audio/video form as well, though most people mean the audio format when they say podcast.
In this show we’ll be talking about audio dramas and will use the words podcast and audio drama interchangeably.
Recordings of OTR (old-time radio) survive today in the audio archives of collectors, libraries and museums, as well as several online sites such as Internet Archive.
