Discovery is the first Star Trek series to air since the Enterprise series and is set a decode before the events of the original Star Trek series. In fact, Christopher Pike is captain of the Discovery during this season. In this series, first officer Michael Burnham is the main character. She is a human who was raised by Vulcans and is the first black leading Star Trek character. Like the original Star Trek TV series from 1966, the makeup of the crew reflects the progressive values of the time. Where the original series showed women working along side men as equals, along with a black woman who was an officer on the bridge, Discovery showcases today’s Millennial values with openly geeky girls and men in gay relationships. Also the reoccurring appearances of the character Philippa Georgiou, sometimes a federation captain and sometimes an empress, along with the name dropping of a Chinese starship here and there continues to showcase the rise of Asia in the new global world order, much as having Chekov and Sulu on the bridge in the original
series.
