006 The Eras of Science Fiction

(Set the stage by: Recap the idea of sf sing a 500 year tradition along with science fiction words used in ancient Hindu texts called the Vedas…)

If you’ll indulge me, I’m going to borrow the idea of eras from science. These eras are independent of genre as genres are closely tied to the human condition at the time rather than the technology to produce story. I expect that the eras will continue to change faster as we speed toward the Singularity.  I offer free a poster of how the seminal work of a new scifi-genre  maps into an era.

Eras

Period BCE – 1450 ACE

Description

Ancient

BCE-1450 ACE

Ancient Civilization Sci-Fi  & 1ACE – 1500 Monastic bible industrialization

Printing

1450s-1890

The Awakening of Printing- books for those who can afford them. Major cities have a press.

Pulps

1890s  to the ultra modern 1930s

Everyman sci-fi with evocative covers and gizmos.

Golden Age

1930s – to the limitless 1960s

Thrilling adventures with good characters to go with gizmos. Typewriters are the price of a carriage.

New Wave

1960s  to the “congratulations we can get along enough to not nuke each other” 2000s

Autre writing style, complicated gray area topics.  Word processors are the cost of a car.

Digital

2000 to the, well, pretty OK present. I mean, things are looking up with electric self driving cars and we’ve finally got space rockets landing fins down.

Websites, ebooks, smart phones, and LeanPub. Anyone can afford a computer and anyone can publish.

Next episode we’ll start a series on author Interviews at Norwescon 2018. Featuring Editor and owner, Bob Brown of B Cubed Press; author, publisher, editor, and teacher Patrick Swenson; author Manny Frishberg; and author RZ Held.
